A breakthrough in coreopsis breeding, 'Corusco Cream-Red' is an extremely compact annual wildflower praised for its unique coloration and early flowering habit. Growing just 8 to 12 inches tall and blooming just 75 days from sowing, 'Corusco Cream-Red' coreopsis sets masses of burgundy-eyed cream-colored flowers from midsummer into fall. The flowers' nectar attracts plenty of bees and butterflies to the garden, and their seeds entice birds. But they also make excellent cut flowers for striking summer bouquets and mixed floral arrangements.
A Coreopsis tinctoria cultivar, commonly called coreopsis, tickseed, or golden tickseed, 'Corusco Cream-Red' has a dwarf habit that's perfect for a patio pot. But the plant creates a stunning display when grouped or massed in beds and borders; and since it self-seeds in optimal conditions, it's an excellent option for naturalizing in native wildflower gardens, meadows, or prairies. Coreopsis works well in rock gardens and cottage gardens, but it's a must-have in cutting gardens and butterfly gardens.
'Corusco Cream-Red' is a seed-raised coreopsis that's suited for direct sowing or for production growing in small pot sizes at low temperatures. In the garden, this coreopsis is easy to grow and low maintenance. 'Corusco Cream-Red' coreopsis grows best in a sunny spot with medium moist, well-draining soil. The plant is drought tolerant and requires little water, making it a great option for areas that have poor, dry soil or that are just hard-to-water. Removing faded flowers promotes reblooming and prevents excessive self-seeding.
Direct sow seeds outdoors after last frost date in spring, or starting seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost date, and set them out after the threat of frost has passed.
